The Flexible Foundation: How Family Governance Can Provide Stability in Times of Change
A successful family enterprise relies on the foundation of good governance to ensure the right conversations are being held at the right times by the right people in the right area of the enterprise leading to the best decisions. During this session, we’ll discuss some of the common and predictable changes that families will need to navigate in their pursuit of long-term success and how family governance can provide direction every step of the way.

Family Governance & Family Culture: A Two-Way Street
Culture is an asset for family enterprises and often an irreproducible competitive advantage. Find out how family governance and family culture influence each other – in ways that can be positive or negative. You will also learn to recognize common paradoxes of governance in family enterprises and create strategies to address the ones that challenge you the most. Families that are good at managing paradoxes will create stronger, more resilient family governance.

Designing Fun & Fair Family Governance Processes
Solid processes, engagement and transparency help families find the strength to deal with the challenges that come with owning and managing their businesses. This session dives into the elements of creating fair governance processes on “how we’ll do this together” to help with decision-making as a family. Even when people don’t personally agree with a decision, they can usually accept it if they believe that the process is fair.

It Comes Down to You: Leadership & Influence in Family Governance
Discover the five key elements of leadership that have proven helpful to family governance leaders as they strive to align the family with the owners and business leaders around a common vision for a successful future.

How Families Prepare Owner Groups for the Road Ahead
Effective ownership has a material impact on family enterprise continuity. And, in the early stages of family business, the overlap of owner, manager and family roles often obscures the need to develop owner skills. In later stages, with a diverse and dispersed owner group, development of owner skills and relationships is very hard. How do effective owner groups underpin family enterprise continuity? How can you start early or apply the concepts of an owner's mindset in later stages of family enterprise? We’ll share skill sets, methods and practical applications to develop and educate owners at each stage.

Hot Topics Panel Discussion with Family Business Leaders
This panel features leaders from three family enterprises who tackled pressing cultural and social issues like D&I, the definition of family, corporate social responsibility, etc. They will share how they navigated those topics and how their approach reflects their family’s values and culture. Our panelists include:

  • Henry Artalejo is Griffith Foods' Senior Vice President of Global Human Resources where he helped develop a full Diversity and Inclusion structure with four strategic areas of focus: Diverse Talent, Inclusive Workplace, Supplier Diversity, and Partnerships.
  • Shannon Tolliver is White Castle's Sustainability Social Responsibility and Environmental Sustainability Manager. She is active in the company's efforts of continuously improving their environmental performance using best management practices and emphasizing pollution prevention and efficient use of resources.
  • Meaghan McCurdy is Kimball Midwest's Director of Culture, Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) where she was instrumental in developing and creating the company's CDI Department that focuses on solidifying the company’s existing culture, including its vision of remaining family owned and operated. In addition to developing frameworks around the company’s core values and behaviors, she has facilitated the creation of a CDI Associate Resource Group, implemented training around unconscious bias and the benefits of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and ensured CDI initiatives are embedded in annual plans across the entire organization.
